The US CMA stands for Certified Management Accountant. It is a premier professional certification offered globally by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) in the United States. This certified management accounting certification validates an individual's expertise in financial planning, analysis, control, decision support, and professional ethics, making it highly valued by multinational companies for roles in management accounting and financial management.
To be eligible to sit for the CMA US exam, you must be an active member of the IMA, enroll in the CMA program, and have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or an approved professional certification. Additionally, the degree must be completed within seven years of passing the exam.
The recommended CMA US course duration is typically 12 to 18 months for dedicated study. However, candidates have a maximum of three years from the date of enrollment in the CMA program to successfully pass both parts of the US CMA exam.
After passing both exam parts, candidates must also fulfill a two-year continuous professional experience requirement in management accounting and/or financial management. This experience can be completed before or within seven years
The CMA USA exam is computer-based and administered globally in three testing windows: : January/February, May/June and September/October each year at Prometric testing centers
The CMA US exam is divided into two parts, each lasting 4 hours. Part 1 and Part 2 consist of two sections: 100 Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) to be completed in 3 hours, and two Essay Scenarios to be answered in 1 hour. Candidates must correctly answer at least 50% of the MCQs to proceed to the essay section, and the minimum passing score for each part is 360 out of 500.
